La prima bicicletta di Cannondale è stata la bici da turismo ST-500. Il 1984 segna l'entrata di Cannondale nel mercato delle mountain bike. Nel 1987 Cannondale tiene il ritmo con una linea di 14 biciclette in alluminio, inclusi modelli da corsa, touring e all-terrain. Torniamo indietro di 25 anni... la grande novità del 1991 fu l'introduzione del primo design Cannondale full suspension, il cosiddetto E.S.T. (Elevated Suspension Technology).

Quell'anno era stata l'Italia ad ospitare il secondo mondiale della storia della mountain bike, dopo Durango erano stati la Toscana e Barga (Il Ciocco) ad organizzare la massima rassegna iridata. Nel 1992 Cannondale ha rivoluzionato la sospensione anteriore con la HeadShok, una forcella inserita nel tubo di sterzo, a scorrimento principale su cuscinetti ad aghi. Questa tecnologia è stata brevettata e sviluppata, e si trova tutt'oggi nei prodotti HeadShok e in quelli Lefty. Nel 1996 Cannondale lancia una specifica bici da downhill con doppia sospensione denominata Super V DH, equipaggiata con una forcella anteriore HeadShok Moto 120. Fu nominata miglior bici da Downhill di sempre da Mountain Bike Action.
